The Research Internship Program began in 1999 with one intern and has expanded up to a maximum of eight interns during a summer season. In the past five years, 24 interns have collected more than 16,000 dives in dive locations throughout the U.S., Caribbean, and South Pacific.
Meet the Current & Past Interns
Goals
- To assist in on-going research projects including:
- To provide interns with an experience in dive safety research (participants receive training in diving physiology and research methodology); and
- To educate the diving public about DAN and PDE.
Methodology
Interns are trained as PDE Field Research Coordinators (FRCs) to collect dive data using the Diving Data System and dive computers. Interns also receive training in research methodology, which can be applied to both field and lab studies. After the initial week of training at DAN Headquarters and Duke, interns are placed with host facilities where they will remain in residence for 2 to 2 ½ months to collect PDE data. DAN Research is currently conducting studies in both the field and laboratory.
DAN can also work with the interns' educational institutions to offer academic credit for their work.
Budget/Compensation
DAN will cover room, board and related expenses. Interns will be given a monthly stipend to cover these incurred costs. In turn, interns are required to keep an expense log of all incurred costs and submit these weekly to the Internship coordinator.
Funding for the DAN Research Internship Program is primarily from contributions by its generous supporters. The number of participants in the DAN Internship Program depends on the amount of funding available for the program that year, all of which comes from donors and supporting dive businesses.
